For the original Smash game on the N64 it's hard for me to have a single favorite character, so I'll keep it at two. My favorite 2 were Mario and Kirby. I thought Mario was a great all round character. A good mixture between power and speed, and his up + B attack was very useful when I was hit off stage. Kirby was deadly in the right hands, and apart from being a little light, I thought he was unstoppable. I used to use his up + B to get instant kills on the edges of a stage. :D Very good for tournaments.
For melee my favorite two were Fox and Link. Link was a walking item shop and very powerful, so he proved to be very useful. But he was a little slow. So for speed I used Fox. I used him whenever I wanted to get up close or when people picked Zelda, because they rarely ever played with Zelda (Sheik).
Mario was good too. His cape is great for all sorts of things, like turning people around when they were trying to come back on stage with up + B. :D
