I used an external HDD with the PS3 but I haven't gotten it to work with games. Maybe it does. I don't know. All I was able to use it for was to watch movies, listen to music, and pics. Couldn't save games to it or store DLC on it. The Xbox 360 supports it but it only allowed 16GB to be used for games. I was told that they recently doubled this number, though.
And it doesn't make crappy headphones sound better. Some games actually have lower volume when you use headphones (to stop you from going deaf, I assume). It's just that you can use headphones on the controller instead of using the headphones connected to your TV.
