Windows 8 definitly has a learning curve. I installed classic shell to get back the Start Button and I havne't used the new Start Screen. The way I use it, it basicly is Windows 7.

You should tell your client to install "classic Shell" or one of the other Start Button apps.

Why did Windows 8 abandon the start button for the tile UI?  I understand that perhaps that setup might do better in a smartphone or tablet but to make people default back classic shell just to get the start menu makes no sense to me.  If anything they should of had it with the tiles on the desktop versions.  Sure desktop is a dying breed but there are still some people that prefer desktop over anything else.  There isn't any reason for me to upgrade to 8.  However, I didn't update to 7 (from XP) till I got a new computer.  I view Windows 8 in the same light as Vista.  I don't need to update.


The tile based start menu actualy is pretty cool. Once you get used to it you can actualy make it much more personal and convienent than the old start menu.

I agree that removing the start button was a mistake, but once a person has spent a few days without it they can find they don't need it. I don't need it, but I've yet to pull myself away from it.

I did the same thing when I upgraded from XP to 7. I installed stuff to add in the stuff that I missed from XP. But over time I stopped using it and ended up prefering 7. I expect the same will happen with 8. I'll migrate over to the tiles at my own pace.
