I don't think confusion plays any part in it. In a country where the unemployment rate is near 8%, there will always be a high number of parents looking for the most affordable gift for their child. When shopping the electronics section and seeing a 3DS for $169, or a DS for $99 or less, a good number of them will opt for the cheaper device and therefore be able to have more money leftover for other gifts. When you look at the 3DS sales worldwide being over 600,000 units, nearly doubling the DS, I don't see where people are claiming that Nintendo dropped the ball. Of course the DS got a sales spike on a major shopping holiday. That's a no-brainer. Will that be detrimental to Nintendo or the 3DS in the long run? Of course not! I find it funny that if Nintendo hadn't kept the shelves stocked with DS's this holiday season, that there would be a good number of people on this site accusing Nintendo purposely killing-off their most successful handheld ever. Nintendo sold over a million units of hardware between their combined handhelds and consoles. I don't see anything negative that can be taken from that. With over 23 million 3DS's sold in less than 2 years, I wonder what # they will have to hit before people accept that it is a successful successor to the DS.
