I think the PS3 was well worth $400-$500 ($600 is pushing it) considering you got a Blu-Ray player, a large HDD, a good (and free) online network, and probably the best next-gen console. It's also great at playing Netflix, image quality I find is better than the 360 or Wii U even.
Considering that Sony is still giving the platform a ton of support well into its 7th year with The Last Of Us, God Of War Ascension, etc. I think it was well worth it.
I'll gladly pay $400-$500 if PS4 is similar.
