I think his logic is stuck in the old PS2 days where PS2 had many 3rd party exclusives. and helped to sell the console.

Which makes no sense anyway in Nintendo's case as they will always struggle to get real 3rd party support.

 

PS2 was also getting timed exclusives like GTA.

True, but Sony was putting stock in GTA's success before it blew up completely with part 3.
