How many of these games were made by Sony's first string developers? Like none? And how many of them have the potential to carry the system through grim times? None (otherwise the Vita would sell right now). Sony isn't bringing their A-game to the platform and they aren't going to. That's why there is a problem.

In America and Europe, the Vita is already in the near death-like status the PSP was after a couple of years on the market. Sluggish hardware sales and no software sales to speak of. It's going to finish 2012 with about 1m units sold in either territory, being on pace to sell only 1m in 2013 in either territory. Western third parties don't care much for handhelds to begin with and even if they were able to sell to 10 percent of Vita owners in the West by the end of 2013, that's still only 400k copies. A figure that doesn't justify development of exclusives. It's not even enough to care about making solid ports, so with sinking game quality the Vita isn't going to turn things around. The PSP never made a comeback either and it was much better positioned than the Vita.

In Japan, things don't look as bad software-wise. However, the 3DS is much stronger there and it's going to pick up some serious momentum in the next six months (Animal Crossing, holidays, Dragon Quest VII, Monster Hunter 4) while the Vita will continue to majorly struggle. Even the most loyal third parties will think hard about supporting the Vita when its lifetime sales have been outpaced by a factor of 10:1 and addressing 10 percent of the installed base leads to 200k or less copies sold. Sony has already admitted that it has been hard for them to attract third party support, a situation that they didn't anticipate. And there's nothing in sight to turn things around. At this point in time Sony needs nothing short of a miracle.

Who do you count as first string? Japan Studio? X Dev? Guerilla Games? Santa Monica? Superbot? Bend? Liverpool? San Diego? Or does it have to be Naughty Dog or Sucker Punch?

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
