It's basically Panasonic's proprietary version of Blu-ray, it uses the same Blue laser tech.  Just like the Gamecube/Wii discs & drives were Panasonic's proprietary versions of DVD.

I called it Blu-ray because it's what the drive is closest to, should have called it pseudo Blu-ray.
