tl;dr but there's really no defense for day 1 or on-disc DLC. It's a rip off.
I actually hate nearly all forms of DLC, at least all DLC that's planned before the game is even released (majority of DLC) because it just feels like a cynical and manipulative way to circumvent the industry standard of charging $60 for a full game. But with DLC they are able to lure the consumer into their game, and when you're stuck they will milk you for more profit.
