Can the PS3 overtake the XBox 360 by January 1, 2013?

No

The gap might be 1.7 million now, but like the last 2 years have shown, the yearly difference shrinks during Q4. (or the gap between PS3 and 360 grows in favor of 360)

I think by January 2013, the gap will be 2.7 million in favor of the 360.

 

However I do think in the long run PS3 will catch up to the 360, probably overtake it, but I'm not sure if it will sustain that (Both systems sell well at different times of the year). I think by 2015/2016 PS3 will start to surpass 360 in worldwide sales in the summer months (only to lose the lead due to strong holiday 360 sales), and they will finish with about the same number of units sold.
