Discontinuing a high investment device after two years? No way. I don't think that will ever even be considered by Sony. Look how long it took Microsoft to kill the dead-in-the-water Zune. No, with the Vita, they're looking at hardware that becomes more profitable with time, so a steadily increasing user-base in the first two years is not that bad when compared against the significant loss of a huge launch. All they need to do is convince PSP developers to switch their efforts over to the Vita. That's pretty much all the Vita really needs. Sony's stategy is to continue selling the previous generation device at a high profit, which delays the success of the next generation. Fanboys go crazy over this, but from a business standpoint it's worked pretty well. It just defers the sales for the next gen until the back-end. This is exactly how things went for the PS3, which is selling quite well. Even the PSP didn't really shine until the second half of its life-cycle. |
Very good analysis. Hopefully Sony can pull it off!
