To build a brand and brand awareness though you have to establish that now.

Apple knows every iPhone is going to sell, but they still make a ton of commercials for each new iteration. It's about building brand awareness and keeping the brand in the mind of the average consumer (not just the die hard one).

Apple also never advertises a new iteration that is not immediately available for purchase. They usually don't even announce a product until just before it launches.
