Christianity really became a major religion when it was adopted by Ancient Rome. From there, it spread across Europe. As Rome fell and the former colonies became independent, they stayed Christian, because they couldn't really remember any other system of belief. So, as Europe colonised the rest of the world, the same happened to the people of North and South America and of Africa. Did the Native Americans and Aztecs believe in a Christian god? Do the African tribal religions revere Jesus? Not at all.
Really, the only other place where Jesus features is in Islam, which was largely just an extension of Christianity and Judaism anyway.
