It can't really be a defective gene, because despite having been around for millenia and having shown no positive effects with respect to reproduction, it's still survived. That is to say, a gay person won't necessarily have gay children any more than a straight person will have straight children.
It's all terribly confusing, because that means it can't really be genetic either.
(Also the species is hardly at risk of extinction due to a 10% homosexuality rate)
