A lot of people were perfectly happy to buy 360/PS3 games that were inferior to their PC counterparts. Plus, there's more to it than graphics; with the Wii there were games that were actually better on Wii than on PS360 despite having worse graphics, because the controls enhanced the gamplay. The touch screen has the potential to do the same. |
I think all three consoles will have some form of touch screen gimmickry so I don't see that as a long term differniator. MS is even trying to shoe horn this idea into the existing XBox 360 which is seven years old, no doubt it will be part of the next XBox.
Nintendo needs to just forget about this pissing match. They're never going to win it.
But they should be proactive in other ways. Sell the Wii U as the "new NES" to a lot of these small indie houses in the West, ink the most promising devs to financing deals (which means exclusivity). Keep racking up Japanese exclusives.
Nintendo can sell their own systems on their own content, what they actually need is help in having a few games that can broaden their demographics and make them credible to hardcore players that don't want to pay for a "Mario/Zelda" machine.
But you don't need 1000 third party games to do this. Even 4-5 smart alliances with the right studios can give Nintendo an adequetely diverse library.
