My personal feeling is third parties especially Western ones are a lost cause for Nintendo.
They should focus on smaller Western devs like Frozenbyte (Trine) by really making Nintendo Network a premiere choice for indie houses and building up more exclusive content through Japanese alliances. Get that Itagaki game, get Ninja Gaiden, work out more alliances with Square-Enix and so on.
Even if the Wii U can run say Star Wars 1313 ... if all the versions are $60, who's going to pay $60 for the Wii U version that doesn't run at 1080p and is missing several graphical effects? The 720/PS4 versions are predictably going to sell better. Even as a Nintendo fan, when it comes to my own hard earned money, I'm not buying an inferior version of any game just to support Nintendo.
