You could own a 6-button Genesis controller or a Dual Shock and only occasional stumble across a title that supported it. Too many devs just didn't feel that supporting them was worth it. I remember most PSX games at least using rumble after the Dualshock controllers came out and most fighting games used the six button after it came out.
It was the best controller for Street Fighter 2. I also remember that on Contra Hard Croprt, the xyz buttons switched the move/fire with stand/fire. It was supported quite a bit.
Motion plus is an accessory just like Kinect and Move. The 6 button was a standard controller.
