To answer your question, Moon, when you use your pokemon in battle, they get "Effort points" (Or something) that helps their stat growth. Depending on the enemy they're facing, they'll get different effort points. Really fast enemies, for example, give SPEED effort points. Once your pokemon has gained a number of these effort points (I think it's 6) in a single stat, that stat will raise by 1 next time they level up. Your pokemon can only hold 510 effort points . While in daycare, the pokemon will level up their stats at the base amount and will not get any effort points, but once you pull them out of daycare and battle with them, they will start gaining all their effort points. So no, daycare doesn't really hurt the longterm growth since there is a cap on effort points anyways.
You know what, why am I even answering this off the top of my head? Go here for the facts *quick search* : http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Effort_values
