I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p with games on a 22" monitor at 3 feet away. Same with my 32" TV at 6 feet away.

Those graphs mean absolutely nothing, when it comes to gaming you will be able to tell the difference in almost every situation. If 720p is the best it gets then people wouldn't complain about lack of anti-aliasing on console 720p games.
