Since the controller have motion sensors it can still be used as a gimmick like the Wii in some games. On the other hand it have the second screen which allows a more deep gameplay experience (just like the DS), something as simple as having the map or the inventory screen displaying constantly in the GamePad without the need to pause is incredibly helpful.
