Tablets have been out for a while now. The game pad is pretty much just a tablet with controls. They should have a nice grasp on what is possible or not by now. What we know is that with one controller the Wii I games play just as well on the controller as they do on the screen. This makes sence because the pad is almost as large as the actual console as we have seen in recent pictures.

Tablets are not new, you are right, but they haven't been used in this way for gaming before, up to now it was either touchscreen or controller. With the wii u it's both. I think some games will really benefit from the screen.
