They launched a year later than Microsoft with inferior tech in power, but the tech was a gimmick that succeeded to bring the casuals and drop their inhibitions about the complexities of modern gaming. Nintendos goals are always to be a family gaming company first, gamer company second. When the GC was more powerful than the PS2 Nintendo never capitalized on it. The N64 was the last time I saw a graphics pushing console from Nintendo that had first party to prove it.
Being the strongest console for a year isn't saying very much. Nintendo will have to bring their charm to win people over in this new dance. After about a year the graphics boasting wont mean squat because they'll be so far behind.
