I think nearly all home console machines sell out on launch day pre-orders. The Wii was a first for the industry though, with such high demand that shortages persisted 6+ months. I don't think that will happen with Wii U, but who knows... it's all some kind of domino effect with shortage creating demand which creates the shortage.

Pretty much. I remember reading about the Dreamcast selling out in Japan.

wasn't half the reason the wii's took so bloody long to make at the start being that they are made from half gamecube parts which were in semi manufactured GCs at the time, if I recall correctly the Wiis GPU is the one right out of the GC with an Arm9 tossed in longside it for some more "power"
