How young are most of you guys? This always (always!) happens at console launches. Well, not the selling-out-after-one-day part but shortages at console launches are pretty common. All 3 current consoles were supply constrained at launch (but only for the Wii it became a lasting problem). The PSP was sold out in Europe as well. Same happened to the PS2... yeah, it's pretty much the norm for a new consoles to sell out at launch.
The good news is this: You will find a place to pre-order if you keep looking. After a while retailers will take pre-oders again and they will reserve hardware for launch so even in that case you could still try to walk into a store early in the morning and just pick up the console on launch day.
As for me I pre-ordered the premium model + Super Mario Bros. on Amazon. Amazon usually tries to match the cheapest price at launch so I should be good to go. Yeah!
