Was Super Mario Bros. 2's Blur Effect - A Mistake?

Perhaps this was done to alleviate issues of people not being able to see the 3D image clearly before? I've had issues with it in the past - if I buy this game I'll check out the 3D option and see if this somehow alleviates the line-crossing.
