Honestly, I think $250 would be fine if it came with 4 or 8 GB of memory, either on board or via flash cart. The real problem is the lack of any killer games at the moment, with the possible exception of Uncharted. Hell, say what you want about Nintendo, at least they made sure to release a major game at launch (Nintendogs+cats) and another multi-million seller a few months later (Ocarina 3D). And that's not counting some decent selling secondary titles (SSF43D and Pilotwings Resort).
So, much to my disgust, I have to pronounce the 3DS's early software lineup better than the Vita's. Explain to me about how Gravity Rush is a game-changer all you want, the 3DS had more games that sold units.
In my opinion, if Sony wants to sell the Vita, they need to go beyond what sold the PSP. The PSP was barely a success, especially considering its low attach rate. The Vita needs some BIG games, and preferably by the end of 2013 if they want to keep on having 3rd party support.
Games that made the PSP a success are a good start. A new Gran Turismo, 3D Platformers, and God of War need to be announced soon and join Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and Sly 4. But what if Sony opened a digital store that would obliterate the Nintendo eShop with games for as low as Free? THAT would make the Vita look like a cheaper alternative, especially with cheaper memory.
