It's a cross between "too expensive" and "not enough games", but more the former than the latter.
If I buy now, I will be able to play the games that will undoubtedly be released on Vita in the future, but I will pay considerably more than after a price cut, potentially for a model with fewer features. I bought a PSP-1000 several years ago, and I'm not falling into that trap again.
