The Master System was fun, the Genesis was legendary, the Saturn was underappreciated, and the Dreamcast was before it's time. Some of my all time favorite games are on those systems and I'll never forget the those glorious days when Sega was at the top of its game. I still enjoy a lot of Sega games, but there are things I miss, mostly the experimental stuff like Rez or the artistic stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga. I still play those games but I do long for more. If the same happened to Nintendo it would be regretful. But there are more games out there, very good games, than just Nintendo games. It's unlikely that the quality would drop like it did for a time with Sega. What I loved about Sega was it was willing to put out a few misses if it scored a hit from its experiments. Nintendo is less about taking chances and more about capitalizing on what works with a twist. That's why Sega was hit or miss throughout each generations. I'm glad that Sega has found its way back to the light. I have no doubt Nintendo would be able to find its way back to the light as well if the same happened. The world would keep on spining and Mario would keep on jumping. |
I started my gaming in the arcades (most of them from Sega and Capcom) and with Sega consoles. In Spain Nintendo stuff was "Nintendo expensive" so only rich kids had them (It is a bit better now).
Nintendo won't leave the hardware business until they are in a very bad economic situation. If that happens (very unlikely right now with their current financial status) they'll have to cancel projects, reduce the budget of other projects and fire talented people, like Sega did.
Sega had to cancel most of their experiments but the quality of Sonic, Phantasy Star, etc dropped too. We haven't seen a Sonic game as good as the genesis ones. I don't want to remember what they did with Golden Axe. The only franchise that is as good as always is Virtua Fighter, and nobody cares about it.
As for other games being good... the quality of games have dropped since the early PS2 days. The only good thing I've seen this gen in the HD consoles is the comeback of 2D fighters. And maybe Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles and Vanquish (I haven't played those).
Also I don't like FPS games so for me it's even worse.
