The Gamecube was last to release during it's generation and never had the chance to capture any of PS2's thunder. While releasing first doesn't guarrantee success (Sega Saturn), I think it gives Wii U the chance to succeed that Gamecube never had. |
The Gamecube launched within a week or so of the Xbox, though I could be wrong. I was one of the people who stood in line and got a launch model. For awhile, it outsold the Xbox and had much bigger launch, numbers wise. The reason it finished last was because it failed with third party core titles and didn't have squat in the online arena (something the Xbox had in spades with Halo 2 and Xbox live).
I see the same fate for the Wii-U because it's lost it's casual market to Apple and their ipad/iphone. Nintendo hasn't had the hardcore gamer in it's pocket since the NES (SNES sold behind the Genesis for most of it's life and was viewed as the "kiddy" alternative to the Genesis which was the "cool", "core" console). After seeing the E3 presentation, learning a little bit about their online structure and reading some of the things their brass are saying, I don't see them winning that market back anytime soon. It's going to be a long GENERATION for Nintendo and their stock holders I'm afraid.
