Now, you also know why.  I knew what your problem was before I even clicked on the thread.  It's probably going to be an issue with the 3DS, too.  Nintendo likes to print the serial number on a sticker that is easily removed or the print rubs off if you actually play with the device.  It sucks.

I just checked and the Vita also has a sticker for the serial code, maybe its just handhelds...
