If anyone is looking at the Dojo updates they have Ness up and how to unlock him, which now it sheds more light on how characters are unlocked this time around, Ness is unlocked by playing 5 brawl matches, reflecting 10 projectiles, or unlocking in SSE, so that's why so many were unlocked through SSE, but there is other ways to unlock other then SSE that is more in line with past Smash titles.
