It's a pretty big deal, and I'd suggest playing the first Mass Effect at some point, if just for the sake of completeness. Now that you've played ME2, though, you may never be able to go back to ME1's gameplay.

Mass Effect really gives you that sense throughout. First the Prothean Beacon and your first vision of the Reapers, and then the threat of Sovereign, who was way better as a villain than Harbinger in ME2, because he actually spoke to you without parroting canned dialogue again and again.
