I'm guessing that you never played Guardian Heroes right?. Because if this game is trully in it's style as it appears to be, depth and creativity are more than assured. 

Pretty much this. You're just falling in the crazy mindset that these types of games are just automatically bad. I've only heard very positive things about it.
