As it is highly glossed over, smartphones is the reason. Smartphones have small sales in Japan...

*sigh*

Srsly?

Smartphones aren't a hot commodity in Japan, regular phones with a lot of features are.  Why do you think the majority of phones are touch screen-less flip phones?  It's the main reason why handhelds can survive Japan.

Leaving aside the fact that for over a decade the Japanese mobile industry has been pumping out games like FFIV: The After long before smartphones really existed, over 24 million smartphones were sold in Japan in 2011 alone. That's out of a population of 127 million.

Although fact one is also really, really important in the context of this overall discussion.
