| zippy said: Does it matter that Mario features in a variety of games and genres? Im a massive Mario fan but i pick and choose which of the Mario games i want to play. For instance the obvious is the 3D Mario games like galaxy and sunshine, then Mario Kart and tennis. But i would steer clear of something like Mario baseball as that sport holds no appeal to me whatsoever. Mario is great, but i wouldnt purchase every game Mario features in just because his name is on the cover. But then there are people who would rather play the 2D games over the 3D ones, my point is, every angle is covered so there is something for everyone. |
This and this again. I don't think Nintendo makes these games seriously expecting people to play every single game that features Mario. Nintendo makes these games for a range of different audiences, even on different sytems, and I would imagine that most people will play a selection of, rather than all, these games. The only difference between Nintendo, Sony and MS in this regard is that the latter two simply don't have a Mario. They would kill for a mascot like Mario and they would be doing exactly as Nintendo does if they possibly could simply because it makes good busines sense.
I get a very strong impression that the people that complain about 'too much Mario' are often people that don't actually play any Mario. People that are smart enough to realise that Nintendo, for the most part, produce extremely high quality games but would be more confortable if they produced something that they don't feel embarrassed to admit they want to play.
I have no problem with people saying they don't like a particular Mario game/s but saying 'I don't like Mario games' (if this is supposed to encompass the 2D, 3D, Kart, Paper, Sports and Party games) more often than not comes off sounding like insecurity. Furthermore it seems to highlight a complete lack of understanding that they are entirely different games/genres where the familiar face on the front cover is simply a marketing ploy designed to appeal to the masses, not fool the self-proclaimed 'hardcore' into thinking they are the same game.
