Why do people hate on Mario?

I don't like playing as a short, fat, generic, plumber character.

Edit:  After reading some "jealousy explanations" I am afraid that is not the reason

For example I dont like Halo, it sells millions on the 360, but I think Master Chief is Bada$$.
