PS Battle Royal will have quite a few characters, so much in fact they will need DLC. Sony has more known characters that came to prominance under or around Sony during their first and second gen. It's a game much like Super Smash for Sony fans who want to enjoy the characters.
LBP Karting is a level creation and mascot game as well as a cart racing title. It will give what Super Mario Kart does and more. Mod Nation Racers was a great title but it needed a mascot and even you have to admit Sackboy being Sonys platforming mascot was a good choice.
Those two games bundled with a PS3 will sell, especially to the younger audience in the holiday season.
Most of the top Nintendo titles were built from side scrolling platforming though. If it wasn't for games like that next level titles like Tomba, Jax and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro or Ratchet and Clank wouldn't exist. Don't think Sony hasn't thought of investing in the same things.
