Yeah, Marthon is a little overrated. I think Apple fans have hyped it up to be more than it is because back then there wasn't anything else for them to play. It has a much better story than Doom, but it's not as visceral or fun.
If you're looking for a classic alternative to Doom you should check out Star Wars Dark Forces. It's so freaking good.
Oh and a good spiritual successor to Wolfenstien is Rise of the Triad. Check it out, gory and fun.
