Journey and Flower creator thatgamecompany has raised $5.5 million in new venture capital funding that will allow it to release games independently. According to a post from co-founder Jenova Chen, a new partnership with Benchmark Capital will allow thatgamecompany to continue to bring “emotionally compelling interactive entertainment to players worldwide.”

While thatgamecompany’s previous releases have been exclusive to Sony, this new partnership will enable the studio “to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact,” according to Chen.

In a separate blog post, Benchmark Capital general partner Mitch Lasky notes that he will be joining thatgamecompany’s board of directors with a goal to “provide the resources for TGC to remain independent, so they can innovate with complete autonomy from the pressures of platforms and publishers.”

Lasky notes that he believes thatgamecompany “can reach the broadest possible audience if that vision can be fully controlled by the company” and that the studio can “bring to games a little of what Pixar films brought to animation -- emotional depth, engagement with fully-realized worlds, and a strong sense of authorship.”
