No, honestly they're in huge trouble in attracting the hardcore gamers. So far the Wii U is perceived 100% same as the Wii, meaning there is Nintendo games + casual fest.

Lost opportunity I'd say because this mission was all about the first year, to convince the hardcore gamers and to give them the opportunity to jump into next gen early. After the first year (less than that in reality) the gamer's mindset is quickly conquered by the PS4 and X720.

They have no 1st party Must Have (Mario Super brothers Wii U looks too similar to the Wii and 3DS versions, it's essentially the same game) and I think 3d party support is much less than anybody would have imagined/feared (lack of multiplatforms and 3d party exclusives such as Zombi U screams "I'm a casual game!").

I originally thought the Wii U would clearly sell over 50 million lifetime but I doubt it now.

Hyperbole.

Nintendo said two days ago at their analyst meeting that they'll care more about the 190M Wiimotes/ 45M Balance Board owners, for now.

That what the launch of the system is for. First you want to try and convert as many of the people who bought and use your last sytem over first then focus on getting you new target market. They want the die hard Nintendo fans and the "Wii moms" because getting someone who already has you product to buy your next product is easier then trying to get back some of the people you lost. Apple is a great example of this tactic, with their annuel "shaming of the poor people".

Your first go for the easy sell with your launch. And then build the base to attract new customers. And the question is how much information did Nintendo hold back and had their partners hold back to release in the two month period before the lauch and into the first few months.
