All modern "traditional" controllers derive directly from the original NES and the SNES following it.

Anyone who thinks otherwise simply doesn't know their history.

The shape of the controller is definitely reminscent of the 360 pad, but having a d-pad/4-face buttons/shoulder buttons/analog sticks are suddenly things Nintendo didn't pioneer? Gimme a break.

I think the shape is an admission that Microsoft is the big fish in the hardcore market that Nintendo is making concessions towards, but that's just aesthetics.
