Sega already was the one that actually pioneered the "MTV style marketing"/"aiming for an older demographic" thing.
Sony just capitalized on Sega/Nintendo's mistakes in the 90s.
Now that they don't have exclusivity on most third party franchises anymore you can see Sony has been eclipsed by Microsoft in a lot of ways for the core gamer.
The modern game industry still owes basically everything to the NES/Famicom IMO. Everything after that was just a natural progression.
