They locked him up after Castlevania: Judgement, not OOE.  OOE actually had decent sales I believe, I mean, I would look it up but its not like I have access to an easy to use video game sales database or anything.

Symphony of the Night is one of my favorite games - but everything else (especially the Sorrow games) seemed like such a lame attempt to recapture the "magic" of that game.  Even the character designs seemed a little too similiar to SotN, and he kept using THE SAME sprites from 16-bit games!  I actually think the best portable Metroidvania is Circle of the Moon - you know, the one not made by IGA.  It actually felt a little bit like its own game, and had a very Belmont-esque protagonist.  I still played and enjoyed all the others, but each one seemed less special then the last.

Here's another thing, while I'm ranting, I remember before Symphony of the Night came out how excited I was for it.  Read the Game Pro preview over and over - my two favorite Super Nintendo games were Castlevania IV and Super Metroid, and this game seemed to be taking one and skinning the other over it.  The thing is though - this was a SPIN OFF OF THE MAIN LINE CASTLEVANIA GAMES!  It wasn't an aciton platformer, it didn't star a Belmont, and it wasn't about one of Dracula's 100 year resurrections.  Yet, this spin off game has some how become the only thing people will accept as Castlevania.

I'll say this, the series got convoluted and super bloated and really did need a reboot. Lords of Shadow would have been an amazing Castlevania game except for the heavy fantasy elements in the first third of the game.  And the lack of sub-weapons.   And the fact you don't fight Dracula.  And the lack of classic Casltevania music.  And the fact that it lacked almost all of the iconic Castlevania enemies.  And the lack of hearts and heart giving candles.  Some more platforming wouldn't have hurt either.  But, you know, besides that.

Well, not to a database that doesn't seem to rely on Wizardry's random number generator, anyway.

I've never been one of those people who gripes that a game series I love is becoming too samey, so I was perfectly happy with the gentrification of Castlevania. SOTN is far and away the best Castlevania, and one of the greatest games of all time, so why change anything? I already wasn't into Portrait of Ruin's stupid character swapping. (My poor ears. "Jonathan!" "Charlotte!" Ugh.) Order of Ecclesia was just a bridge too far for me to get on board with it. It's a quality game, no doubt, but it's not what I want in a Castlevania. Screw that Harry Potter chick with her contrived magic attacks! Castlevania is about a dude with a whip or a sword to me.

Lords of Shadow had that, at least. It also had Castlevania music. Observe!

See? It's there. Oscar Araujo can't help it that he watched too much Lost. We were all tricked into thinking it as a good show for a while.
