Well, it's religion in the US (conservative portion); they're about 300 years behind and treat religion like a nationalist treats nationalism - not to mention nationalism is also a problem in the US. Maybe it is just a problem with Conservative American culture?

I find that to be the primnary issue with the american right: a strict adherence to tradition regardless of sociological, economical, or technological advances.  they care more about tradition than progression.  

I've also found that the quirky thing about religion is that bad people use it to push their ignorant or barbaric beliefs, whereas good people use the good book to do good and be kind to other.  basically, since everyone's so uppity about a right to religion, people can do whatever they want as long as it's in the name of god, and they get to be protected for it.
