Sony blames that Thai floods affected PS3 shipments.

''Our products like PlayStation 3, the sales trend is quite firm, but it was nevertheless affected by the Thai flood. The destruction of supply chain adversely affected the PlayStation. So as is shown in your materials, we have reduced our forecast by 1 million units for the entire year.''

(Sony Corporation F3Q11 Earnings Conference Call February 2, 2012 )

Could mean that PS3 is in pretty tight supply and not necessarily that much overtracked.

I would like to see any major retailers reporting shortages. from what i could tell a lot of companies tried to use that as a scape goat last quarter when outside of HD production there were never any real material shortages

Every PS3 comes with HDD.

perhaps i could have stated it more clearly though production was impacted reserve supply for contracts to volume customers were never delayed, the only down side for some of them were costs were driven up if they worked off short term deals and not long term deals with the manufacturers, supply to the consumer side was constrained a bit but that was to keep volume customers happy. I strongly incredibly strongly doubt sony had any parts shortages at this time.  further if there were any shortages that showed up in the channel would we not have heard about retailers running out of stocks of ps3 frequently? would Sony not announce ahead of time that we are having trouble keeping product in channel and use that as an excuse for lowering guidance in their last Quarters report, which made no mention of the shortage effecting supply of PS3. last mention i see of a shortage by just browsing is june 2011 before the flooding
