Of course the Wii U is a next generation console. It is Nintendo's 6th generation of home consoles and will compete against Sony's 3rd and 4th gens, and Microsoft's 2nd and 3rd gen consoles.

I do believe that you misunderstand the meaning of "gen". The generations started before any of the big 3 current businesses entered the gaming industry.

The generation is defined by technology (as opposed to simply graphical power as a lot people would like). The Wii-mote and its built in continuous online service are what make the Wii a current gen console as they used technology that was modern to the time. The controler with a built-in screen and mic as well as the multi-display technology possed by the Wii U make is a true next gen console as this is technology that is new to console gaming.

The next gen is not defined by CPU and GPU power alone anymore. It hasn't been since Dreamcast.
