The generation of a console has nothing to do with how powerful it is (although that might be a motivation for releasing a new console), it is dependent on what number in the line it is released during:
NES was one generation
SNES is another generation
N64 another
GameCube another
Wii another
Wii U is the upcoming generation.
It's pretty basic math, it's a matter of adding 1s.
