to clarify more Steam doesn't even count game sales, just how many people are playing them at the moment, and 200,000 in 11/11/11 in just the first hours of a game release is amazing, that means the people who finished downloading the game and actually playing it, thats excluding the ones who bought the Limited Edition (which is a lot of people by the way) and the boxed version.
oh and for Free to play games, League of Legends is my current favourite MOBA game (i haven't played DoTA 2 yet) and here is what wikipedia says
As of November 2011, League of Legends had over 32 million registrations and averages millions of players per day, with the number of concurrent users online at any given time peaking over half a million, doubling its player base in 4 months.
The thing about this game is that you have to buy the characters you want to play as, but they give you free characters to try that change every week , and I myself have put more than 60$ on it so far, because its a good game.
oh and there is also Tribes Ascend, I bet sales2009 doesn't know about their sanic fast gameplay because he is a shazbot
