The disappointment is that Nintendo killed the machine, the Wii itself is not at fault. However, Nintendo's despicable decision doesn't undo the first four years of the system's life and all the great games that were released for it.

Certain people like to look at this generation as the Wii being a leader that failed. But remember the facts: The Wii never had AAA third party support aside from a couple of games in the last five years. Meanwhile, the 360 and PS3 both had it all and couldn't manage to beat the Wii in yearly sales regardless. The only reason they eventually managed to accomplish this feat in 2011 is because Nintendo basically stopped to support the Wii. Therefore:

Nintendo > Microsoft + Third Parties
Nintendo > Sony + Third Parties

The conclusion that can be drawn from the seventh generation is that Nintendo can prevail even if the entire video game industry is against them and that there is only one company that can destroy Nintendo.

So what you think the Wii was going to continue selling at record numbers for the next couple years if Nintendo didn't aanounce the Wii-U?

It was droping like a rock, Nintendo had to get a new console coming out because of the state of the Wii. It just didn't have the lasting effect it should of had, giving it somewhat of a "gimmick" title to the console. 

It peaked it's second year out at 24 million and went from 24 to 21 to 17 while the X360 and PS3 continued to rise and rise during each of those years. By 2011 it sold 11 million, sales were down over 50%, in 3 years! And during these 3 years there was several big selling games many price cuts different colors, Nintendo tried it all yet none had any effect, Nintendo would be foolish not to realize this and try to pop of another better Wii before sales REALLY got bad.
