Reading much more than "no comment" from that tells us more about your personal biases than it does about the Wii U ...

If I was to expand upon Nintendo's comment, Nintendo has the money, experience and technical know-how to produce a console that suits their needs. If they wanted to they could produce a system that would rival bleeding edge PCs that cost thousands of dollars today. Their focus isn't on raw processing power though.

Nintendo wants to produce a system that will enable them to produce the kinds of games they want to, and sell this system at a reasonable price to get it into the homes of as many consumers as they can, in order to make money off of game sales for the next 6 to 10 years. The production of more powerful hardware is the means to an end, not an end in itself.

With that said, being that Nintendo claimed (in an interview) soon after the Wii was released that they didn't produce a HD console because they didn't believe the hardware was ready for that yet, I highly doubt the Wii U would have as little (or less) processing power than the current HD consoles. At the same time, I doubt Nintendo cares about a graphical arms race, and if Sony or Microsoft want to have the most powerful console Nintendo will gladly let them.

Ultimately, from what developers have publicly said, I think developers are generally happy with what Nintendo has provided. I also wouldn't be surprised if the anonymous rumours originate from the websites they're published on, or from developers who are not working on Wii U projects.
